Scholarship Program The Houston Society for Coatings Technology has an established scholarship fund. This fund is to provide financial assistance to those eligible who are pursuing a degree with a major in a science aligned with the Coatings Industry. The purpose of the scholarship program sponsored by the HSCT is to encourage the academic training of individuals in disciplines suitable for employment in the coatings industry. It is hoped that by sponsoring these scholarships that the recipients will seek employment in the Houston area coatings industry. It is a purpose of this scholarship program to assist the members and their immediate family by providing educational assistance. It is a further purpose of this program to assist, where possible, those currently employed in the Houston coatings industry to receive training in those academic disciplines which are appropriate to the Houston coatings industry. In brief, the following are the guidelines for the scholarship eligibility. The candidates must reside within the boundaries of the Houston Society and be actively pursuing a course of study in science, mathematics, or engineering. The scholarships will be made based upon the candidate's academic record (ACT, SAT and/or college transcript). Members, member's children, other relatives, or those training to enter the area Coatings Industry are eligible. The scholarships will be awarded annually and renewal will be based upon continued academic excellence. Normally, applications will be accepted in November for an award made for the following year. Letters of application accompanied by transcripts and ACT/SAT test results should be forwarded to the HSCT board for review.
The following detailed guidelines for the administration of the scholarship awards is as follows:
1) Scholarship candidates must reside within the geographical boundaries of the HSCT as defined by the Standing Rules of the Houston Society for Coatings; article SR 1. 2) The applicant must be planning or actively pursuing a course of study leading to a degree in science, engineering, or mathematics. Applicants who are pursing a major field of study in some aspect of coatings technology will have preference over those majoring in other areas of science, engineering, or mathematics. 3) Merit evaluation will be based upon the candidate's college transcript, or upon college board entrance examination (SAT or ACT) results if the applicant has not previously attended college. 4) Candidates meeting the above qualifications are eligible for the competition. Scholarships will be awarded the order of priority listed below: a. Any person currently employed in the coatings industry and who is a member, or could qualify as a member, of the HSCT. b. Children of members, or of persons who could qualify as members, of the HSCT. c. Other relatives of members, or of persons who could qualify as members, of the HSCT. d. Persons not now in the Houston area coatings industry or related to such persons, but who would like to train for possible future employment in the coatings industry. 5) Scholarships will be awarded on a one-year basis. 6) Renewal of scholarships will be contingent upon continued interest in pursuing a degree in science, engineering, or mathematics, maintenance of a 3.0 grade point average (A=4.0), and continued availability of the HSCT scholarship funds. 7) Evaluation of applications for scholarships and scholarship renewals will be made by the HSCT Educational Committee. Recommendations must be approved by the Executive Board of the HSCT. All decisions of the Executive Board of the HSCT in any matter connected with the scholarship competition are final. 8) Letters of application for scholarships or scholarship renewals will be solicited on the local web site (www.HSCT.org). Applications, accompanied by the required transcripts or college entrance examinations (SAT or ACT) results must be received by the chairperson of the Education Board or the President of the HSCT no later than the 31st day of January of the year in which the award will be made. The awards, if any, made for the current year will be announced in April of that year. 9) The awarded person shall become a member of HSCT for 1 year with the dues to be paid by the HSCT. 10) All awards, if any, will be paid directly to the academic institution, on the student's behalf.
